P. Mauriat Professional Trumpet Artist Pete Olstad
Trumpet Player Pete Olstad plays and endorses a P. Mauriat Trumpet Model 600G. The P. Mauriat Trumpet Model 600G is a new professional trumpet design by the P. Mauriat Company. It is a standard weight professional trumpet, with a medium large 460 bore, and has a heavier than average receiver. Pete relates, "This P. Mauriat trumpet is free blowing with just the right amount of resistance. I can play soft and delicate, yet when I really need to stomp on it I can give this trumpet everything I have. The heavier receiver really seems to stabilize the notes. The slots are very even all the way up the trumpet. The P. Mauriat Trumpet Model 600G has a reverse tuning slide and a nickel leadpipe. It is also very easy to get around on, and it is extremely fluid when playing fast passages." Pete also plays a Yamaha 6310Z Bobby Shew fluglehorn.
The trumpet mouthpiece Pete Olstad is now using is a brand new design just for Pete by Dave Monette. Pete relates that this new mouthpiece has one of Dave's "slap" cups and is a somewhat shallow mouthpiece which Pete is accustomed to using. The Monette mouthpiece is a Model BL2 SV3 with a #84 back-bore and #24 drill.
Pete gauges the quality of a trumpet mouthpiece by the overall sound and balance of the harmonics, (mid, low, and high). Pete relates that a good trumpet mouthpiece will have all of the harmonic characteristics present. Since Pete plays quite a bit of lead trumpet, he favors a shallower trumpet mouthpiece to help with the high register. Pete states it is still possible to get a full and balanced sound out of a shallow trumpet mouthpiece. Sometimes a little larger backbore will help coupled with a shallow cup. Pete is pictured here with a Marcinkiewicz Bobby Shew 1 (E-14) mouthpiece.
