Pete Olstad Trumpet Artist Denver, Colorado

Professional Trumpet Artist Pete Olstad

Pete Olstad plays on a Hub Van Laar B1 Professional Model Bb Trumpet. The Hub Van Laar B1 Professional Bb Trumpet has a lightweight bell and lightweight valve cluster. The sound is compact, with good projection and a bright sound with a fine sizzle in the high register. With its light response and great flexibility, one might call the B1 the "gem" of the Hub Van Laar collection. ML bore, 11.7mm (0.461"); Lightweight valves; One-piece hand-hammered bell; bell material brass, bell diameter 122mm (4.807")

The trumpet mouthpiece Pete Olstad is now using is a brand new design just for Pete by Dave Monette. Pete relates that this new mouthpiece has one of Dave's "slap" cups and is a somewhat shallow mouthpiece which Pete is accustomed to using. The Monette mouthpiece is a Model BL2 SV3 with a #84 back-bore and #24 drill.

Pete gauges the quality of a trumpet mouthpiece by the overall sound and balance of the harmonics, (mid, low, and high). Pete relates that a good trumpet mouthpiece will have all of the harmonic characteristics present. Since Pete plays quite a bit of lead trumpet, he favors a shallower trumpet mouthpiece to help with the high register. Pete states it is still possible to get a full and balanced sound out of a shallow trumpet mouthpiece. Sometimes a little larger backbore will help coupled with a shallow cup. Pete is pictured here with a Marcinkiewicz Bobby Shew 1 (E-14) mouthpiece.
